The Manana Island Hermit.
A Series of paintings by Todd Bonita, inspired by the story of Ray Phillips, The Manana Island Hermit.
* Ray Phillips lived on Manana from 1931 - 1975.
* Ray Phillips was born in Maine in 1882.
* Served in WW1, was injured and received a monthly Government pension.
* Graduated University of Maine.
* Moved to NYC in the 20's, lived with his mom, who was a fortune teller. found work as a teacher and food inspector.
* Left NYC in 1931 (aged 39 years old), tired of city and rat race, he buys a small sloop and sails away heading north to parts unknown.
* A few days later he sails into Monhegan. Eventually takes his sloop 150 yards across the straight to Manana where he buys 1/6th of the island and begins to construct a shack made of washed up drifwood. Occasionally heads to Monhegan to buy provisions and begins his life as the Hermit of Manana.
* Buys sheep on the mainland and also keeps geese, collects rain water, uses a kerosene lantern and a battery powered radio.
* Warms himself in the winter by keeping his flock of sheep in his shack.
* "The better I know my sheep, the less I like tourists"...(Ray Phillips). If too many tourist come to visit him, feeling overwhelmed, he would "Bhaaa" like a sheep to deter their company.
* at 83 years old, he slips into the ocean and catches pneumonia, refuses suggestions to head to mainland for care and insists on staying on the Island. He tells his concerned neighbors, "Ill keep a kerosene lamp in my window. If you see the light, it means Im ok. If its out, it means I need help".
* May 4, 1975, the Kerosene lamp went out and Ray passed quietly in his shack on Manana.
* "Wrote a note said be back in a minute, bought a boat and sailed off in it. Dont think anybodys gonna miss me anyway. Mind on a permanent vacation, the ocean is my only medication, wishing my condition aint ever gonna go away"...(Zac Brown).
Paintings coming soon to this page. They will be available for sale online here and in person at the Monhegan House, Monhegan Island summer of 2025.
